There was a Crooked Man by Cat Hogan
Acclaimed Wexford author Cat Hogan’s highly anticipated second novel, There Was a Crooked Manwill be published on September 13th.
A dark and twisting tale of revenge and redemption, the novel is a sequel to the Irish Times bestseller, and award-nominated novel, They All Fall Down.
The book has already received notable praise from international film star and Irish actor Aidan Gillen who says “Hogan writes vividly and unflinchingly. Scott Carluccio Randall is an anti-hero to reckon with.”
Best-selling author and former Hot Press editor Jackie Hayden has further endorsed the sequel with the following, “Cat Hogan has assembled an unsettling cast of vivid characters who move like squatters into your cranium and refuse to leave. Especially the losers and the lost, and the villains who keep you looking over both shoulders long after you’ve put the book down. Prepare to be thrilled.”
Like her debut, There Was a Crooked Man is again set in a fishing village in Wexford but this time, Cat’s imagination took her further afield to Marrakech and Berlin. As Hogan explains, “When I came to the end of writing the first book, I knew the leading villain Scott wasn’t done with either the characters or Ireland. Marrakech was the perfect place for him to hide out for a while. He’s been up to no good but he likes to win and he’s planning his revenge.”
The icing on the cake for Cat was a series of chance encounters with Aidan Gillen. She said, “In the spirit of dreaming big, I had the cast list written for the movie adaptation of the book, before the first book was complete. Aidan Gillen was the perfect candidate to play Scott. It was his voice I heard in my head as I wrote the character, so for Aidan to be so captivated by the bad guy and to give me a cover quote was just magic.”
Since the launch of her debut novel 12 months ago, life has been quite the whirlwind for Cat.
They All Fall Down hit the Irish Times bestseller list a couple of short weeks after publication and went on to become an Amazon UK and an Amazon US bestseller. The paperback edition was released in May of this year and it has been going from strength to strength.
Cat lives in her native Co. Wexford with her two boys within spitting distance of the sea. Her father Pat, a lightship man, instilled in her a love of the sea and the stars. Her mother, Mag, taught her to read before she could walk. Cat drinks too much tea, cooks way too much food and never gets enough sleep.
Cat has been a fulltime writer for the last two years and has also facilitated numerous workshops and spoken at many festivals including Write by the Sea, Kinsale Literary Festival -Words by Water, Waterford Writers Weekend, and Bray Literary Festival.
There Was a Crooked Man will be launched by RTE broadcaster Rick O’Shea in Eason, Stephens Green, Dublin on September 13th and by world famous Irish author Eoin Colfer in Wexford Library on the 14th.
